Please note: these pages have been reproduced from the following website: The Irish Pirate Radio 1978-1988

The original site contains an excellent archive of pirate radio in Ireland, but it is hampered by the fact Geocities UK place a limit on the number of pageviews on the site. The site is then blocked. After that, you have to wait over an hour to view the site again. So to get around this, I have reproduced the pages here, where there are no restrictions on viewing limits!

VESUVIUS MARSIVIA: On this page you see a photograph of a location not far from Dublin's city centre. It is a view looking down Chapel Lane from Parnell street. A place not unknown to Bono and the guys, for after the problems at Radio Dublin in early of April '78, the DJ's set up home here under the name of the Big D. It would be the station most people in Dublin listened to and programmes on the Big D, using the frequency 273 metres, began on Monday April 10th from Chapel Lane.

The radio station spent nine months of it's history at 11 Chapel Lane. The fire in the studio in the early hours of the second day of January 1979, which set much of Mary St. ablaze, meant they had to find a new location and bid farewell to the lane once home to a church.

Another problem for the Big D came in the early hours of June 15th when the pirate station was two months in existence. It was a ring of the bell. Sometime between 2o'clock and half past two that morning, the P&T and Gardai arrived in Chapel Lane, with a cassette tape, to give to one of the DJ's. This post office raid went down as the most savage and brutal of them all. Pickaxes came out and walls were hacked down when the DJ refused to open the door for the tape...
